It’s 5:30 in the evening; you’re on a crowded bus or train. There’s a sea of faces before you. The atmosphere is brimming over with stuff to watch and listen to, stuff that creates ideas for characters, relationships, stories. Arrays of emotions are being displayed through facial gestures, body language and bits and pieces of dangling conversations.
You watch and listen as if your life depended on it. It does. Your writing life, that is. You need this stuff to make living pictures of the human experience. Be a watchman who’s always looking for listening opportunities to come along; opportunities that inspire you to creatively build life stories. But remember:
First keep watch over your relationship with God. Watch it grow through a life of gratitude, love, loyalty and integrity. Listen to His word as if your life depended on it. It does. God’s word is your life. Put Him first and commit everything that you do to Him. Let your house be built by the Lord; if He builds it, they will come.
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. Psalm 127:1 (NIV)
